No time to think, just ranting...
Jeez, things have been busy lately: finally did the last changes to my next book so that’s being sent off to the printers today (hopefully); interviewed Che Fu and managed to stop myself from asking him why he was the only local rapper who wasn’t available to be interviewed for my book; had band practise with the recently returned Ruby Suns (I’ve missed playing music so much, but in the end I was pretty grumpy and unenthusiastic!); appeared on the radio version of pop goes the weasel along with Milan from Sommerset and Mieke from Foamy Ed (you might not like those bands, but they were much friendlier/cooler people than I was … I think I even got on Jacqui Brown’s nerves after a while, which is saying something); arranged for my publisher to book my flights for the Montana awards (I’ll be there from 21st to 27th July, so if anybody knows of any gigs, etc down there, or wants to offer me a couch to sleep on for the first night then speak up); got to work today to find that they’d changed the whole computer system, making me wish I’d paid a little more attention during all those endless training sessions…

Anyway, I wanna finish this week by getting hellishly drunk (I will probably wait until after watching “the Devil and Daniel Johnston” on Sat night – all day I have been happily depressed by the recurring refrain of his song “some things last a long time”). I have been gifted the following spirits and liquors, so if you have any ideas for cocktails then bring them on…

Kahlua
Sambuka
Crème de menthe
White crème de cacao
Martini
Rum
Baileys
Whiskey

Looking at your liquor list it appears that you are always one short of a straight.
For two out of three, the best I can see is the B52.

Take a shot glass or liqueur glass or an egg-cup if you have to.
Pour two thirds full with Kahlua
Gently float a layer of Baileys over the back of a teaspoon to three quarters of the shot glass.
Even more gently pour Cointreau on the inside of the spoon, touching the side of the glass, to float to near full.

Pouring carefully will give three distinct layers.

Take a large mouthful, take the last mouthful.

That's it.

Cheers.

Grab yourself a cheap bottle of butterscotch schnapps as well, and shake equal parts of creme de caco, baileys and the butterscotch with cream. Serve it in a glass drizzled really lightly with honey and you've got yourself a Honeycomb. They're one of my all time favourite cocktails. Or baileys and creme de caco and cream and malibu and a banana blended up is goooood too.

Are the Montana awards in Wellington? Since I just got the most comfortable couches in the world, I am happy to offer them out. Consequently, apparently I am having ten people to stay tomorrow night, only one of whom I know. Rock.

Thanks for the drink advice and the offer of a couch. Very cool. I still have your e-mail address so once I've organised exactly what my plan is then I'll get in touch.

Did you grow up on the North Shore or something ... heeheehee ... personally I would never go back to the mixes of those teen years. It's hard enough drinking whiskey these days as it is, without mixing it with lighter fluid or whatever else lay to hand.

So it is now Thursday. Did you empty all eight bottles? If so what was the prefered mix?

Preferred mix was: one part Crème de menthe, one part White crème de cacao, and two parts soy milk (it's meant to be cream and then it's a grasshopper, but the soy milk worked just as well - the recipe was on one of the bottle's labels!). It turned out there was also a bottle of galliano so I drunk that in shots. All interspersed with half-a-dozen beers or so.

End result: passing out at the friend's house in quite an unbecoming state. But the apologies the next day were accepted, so all's well, that ends well...

Hi! What's 'the devil and daniel johnston'? I guess it's not on tv right?

No, not on TV. It was film at this year's film festival, though you've already missed both screenings. I went along to see it with Siobhan, funnily enough, and looking around it seemed like I knew half the audience. The doco was pretty good - detailing Johnston's life and delusions - though if you're a fan then you've probably read most of it before.

As far as TV goes, I reckon the John Safran series of religion should be good - that's 9.30pm on Tues.

Might try and visit you once I get back from Wellington.
